How the country’s climate affects the choice of materials for the roof?

December 20, 2018

The roof is one of the important components of your home. It protects structures from precipitation, protects heat in the house and carries many other functions. Roofs are covered with material called the roof. To determine the type of roof, they usually consider a number of housing properties, including the region in which it is located.

In places with a small amount of roof precipitation, as a rule, they are made flat or almost flat (with a minimum slope). In places where there is a lot of precipitation, especially snow, they build inclined roofs, which helps water and snow not linger at the top, but fall down.

Roofing work involves the installation of roofing roofs on the roof. These roofing products can be finishing materials or additional elements, for example, a drainage system, a weather vane or a snow retainer. In fact, all these roofing products help the roof to function in the best way. The roof itself (finishing material) is made of artificial or natural materials. In Asia, for example, roofs can be built from bamboo, and Africa from banana leaves, in the Middle East of concrete slabs, and in Russia typical roofing materials are tiles, as well as flexible roof. In Europe, especially in the UK, there are straw roofs made of waterproof vegetation, and these roofs provide protection against constant rains. In England, they also believe that natural material and straw roofs help houses look traditionally and stylish. The straw roofs in the United Kingdom are something symbolic, like red buses. The material is in everyday life for thousands of years and is still used, because it is considered stable (especially now, when the trend is ecology and healthy houses). Nevertheless, straw roofs today are not building as often as before, because they are quite difficult to mount – much more complicated than modern materials, such as tiles or roller roofs. By the way, contrary to widespread opinion, straw roofs are suitable for a wet climate with frequent rains, as in the UK. In dry climate, such roofs are inappropriate because they easily ignite.

Bamboo roofs are popular in eastern cultures, first of all, because this material is available in the East countries. Concrete roofs are common in the Middle East, for example in Egypt or Iraq. They are predominantly flat, so people can spend time on the roof and use the roof as an additional space. In the Middle Eastern countries, people sometimes sleep on the roof to find relief from the heat at night. Concrete roofs are quite heavy, and require large and strong walls. In a number of countries, houses with concrete roofs are built in regions subject to hurricanes. Concrete roofs perfectly protect against strong winds, especially if the whole house is made using reinforced concrete elements and stands on a strong foundation.

Roof bitumen is best suited for houses in a temperate climate. In hot climate, direct sunlight can damage the bitumen roof, including a flexible roof. But the bitumen roof with a slope is good for draining water, although it is not too suitable for a climate with a lot of snow (ice building on such a roof can damage it). The fact that such a roof is not often placed is based on the fact that it is not the most durable (12-17 years). In addition, it is not environmentally friendly (it is extremely difficult to dispose of it, so it ends life on landfills).

Cedar roof is a natural option, and the tree serves several times longer than bitumen. But the supplier of the cedar roof should be verified, only in this case it will last a long time. Such a roof is also suitable for moderate climate.

Ceramic tiles are also considered natural because it consists mainly of clay. But this is an expensive and very heavy roof, although it serves for about 50 years. She is popular in Spain.

Slate (shale roof) is quite common all over the world, but its durability will vary depending on its thickness (50-120 years).

Aluminum and steel roofs (metal roof from sheets) are quite durable (serve 2, or even 3 times longer than the bitumen roof). Metal roofs can vary depending on alloys, but they are good for different climates and are classified as energy -saving. In sunny weather, they reflect the sun, and in winter they protect warm. Metal roofs are considered the most green, safe and environmentally friendly.

Green roofs in the good old concept of green roofs, that is, roofs with green spaces, help reduce damage from different types of pollution. In addition, landscaping roofs provide insulation to the house.

An ideal roof option is the roof under which the attic is located. It is an additional insulator and a noise barrier. But the plan must necessarily include roof ventilation systems, water barriers, isolation, etc. p.
