Vertical farming promises to improve food security, cut emissions and eliminate fertilisers (almost) – and it’s popping up all over the UK
Promising hyper-local produce with minimal environmental impact, the sector is set to thrive amid rising food prices and climate concerns.
Dutch sustainable farming specialists One Farm are the latest firm to secure a deal to build a vertical farm in the UK. The company will transform a disused warehouse in Suffolk into a facility for large-scale leafy greens cultivation.
Meanwhile, in Gloucestershire, Jones Food Company is preparing to open its second vertical farm. The first opened in Lincolnshire back in 2019.
Vertical farming is the practice of growing food indoors, on multiple tiers. LED units provide light for growing crops using hydroponics, where plant growth is provided by liquid nutrients supplied to a special soil-free medium.
